Though the 2016 British Fantasy Awards did not include a YA book category, that didn’t stop YA novels from sneaking their way onto the list. Both the second volume of G. Willow Wilson’s Ms. Marvel series and Noelle Stevenson’s Nimona are finalists for the Best Comic / Graphic Novel category.
Ms. Marvel takes place in the larger Marvel universe and follows Kamala Khan, a young Muslim girl who finds herself gifted with supernatural powers.
Nimona follows a shapeshifting teen girl named Nimona in a medieval-meets-modern world, where knights use cellphones, swords and hoverboards. She teams up with the evil Lord Ballister Blackheart to take down a group called the Corporation.
The YA graphic novels are competing against Kelly Sue DeConnick’s Bitch Planet, Gail Simone’s Red Sonja, Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples’ Saga, and Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman: Overture.
The winners will be announced on September 25 at FantasyCon 2016.
